Dave LaGuardia #5 & #55 Late Model - Super Mods

From the Rick Wasilko collection, here are some photos of Dave LaGuardia and crew members/family members shot at both Colorados Englewood Speedway and Colorado Nat'l Speedway. I cannot recall what years Dave drove, but I will guess it was between the mid 70's into the mid to late 80's. I think that his father, the late Mike LaGuardia, bank rolled these cars. Mike owned a bar first located at 72nd and Federal and later at 72nd and Lowell. Both were called the Italian Stallion. Mike fielded some terrific looking cars, both late models and super- modifieds for Dave's driving pleasure. They sported some pretty impressive sponsors as well, such as Jolly Rancher Candies. Stan Swank (Stan's Sign Co.) was the sign painter responsible for many of these great lettering/pinstriping jobs. I am not too familiar with Dave's crew members, although in some shots it appears that Kevin Gallo and some of the other Gallo family members are present.

Vintage Speedway Program Ads

This might be kind of a 'dumb' thread to start, but then again, I'm not sure. Could be interesting. Let's see what you think.....

From whatever track I've visited over the years I've always loved the "speedway programs", from it's featured photos, driver listings, track news, club member listings, and, yes, even the ads that appeared inside. I especially liked the ads that featured a race car in them.

I started selling programs when I was 11 (and saved them long before that), and have ended up collecting way too many boxes of these things. I've even acquired many from way before I was born.

This thread features some cool or funny program ads I've run across. I'd love to see any that you might want to add as well....

1974 - Neat pic of Don Wilson in the Bob Olds Midget.

1964 - Dig Ody Fellows cool ride in this ad.

1949 - Mmmm, nothing like fine food and bad liquor!?! What the...?
Your "last race" indeed.

1968 - Crash Mullins gassing up before the races.

1961 - Apparently everyone (including drivers, clowns and patrons) knew
where this place was. They didn't leave an address or phone number.

1974 - "Shimmy & Shake ARE great on a woman", but not Pick Pickering's
#40 Late Model.

New old timer

Old timer who enjoys looking at and visiting with others involved in racing. I have seen the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and sprint and midget races everywhere in the country except the east coast. I attended the Knoxville Nationals for 27 years in a row. Because of all of the candles on my birthday cake I no longer attend many races. Would enjoy hearing from and listening to all.

Remember you could buy Midget at Monkey wards

For you younger Midget buffs, there was a day when you could buy a full blown 1/4 midget from the local Montgomery Wards stores.
Here is one of the ads from 1960, giving details about the car.
For $490.00 you could pick it up and go racing that weekend.
If you can not read the the part telling what all the car was built with, let me know and I'll write it out.

Midgets at CNS 1975

Photo's courtesy of RJButz, I love these candid, non professional snap shots. These are a couple of RMMRA event at Colorado National Speedway in 1975.

Duane Harr chats and admires his always beautiful #82, this was the Edmunds kit car that replaced the trusty Kurtis Kraft, looks like Dennis "Bush" Hall is changing gears.

Looks like Bush is finished with the gear change, classic Chevy II sticking out from under the hood of the "Decals Inc" midget. Nice towel being used as a hand rag there.

Looks like they are lining up, coming off turn 4 at CNS, Duane Harr is outside Pete Brandenburg in Bud Zimmerman's roadster #19, and Garry Staggers in his own Offy #43.

Maybe heat race action, Larry Houghton in his own#35, Duane Harr #82, another Edmunds car #16 is Willy Hardman's, car usually driven by Ray
Flanagan, to me that looks like Willie at the wheel. Lots of Chevy II's, all three in this shot are Chevy's.

Dave Strickland Sr. in Roger Mauro's Edmunds VW#1, Don "Spyder" Anderson in Vern Shaver's #10, Eddie Jackson in Chuck Mauro's #5, Don Edmund's cars with VW power fill up this photo. That may be Steve Troxell as team mate to Strickland, in Roger Mauro's Edmunds built car, however is the lone SESCO (Chevy), hard to tell for sure. These photo's are wonderful memories, I was 15, and chomping at the bit to some day get out there and race with those dudes. Of all the drivers in these shots, I did get to race with Staggers, Brandenburg, and Hardman. All the others had retired by the time I got in.

Long, long time ago

Many, many years ago we, me and a few friends with a '34 Ford coupe, towed from Sioux City, Iowa to race in Denver. One of our group had an uncle who lived in Denver and the purpose of the trip was to 'visit' the uncle and of course we just happened to bring along the stock car. On the way we found a race track in I think Sterling, Colorado and ran a Sunday afternoon show. All I remember was the place was so dusty you could hardly see the cars. Our guy was paid in cash $5.75 for his day of racing and I don't remember where he finished. We finally made it to Denver and with the uncle along we were headed to the track when it rained buckets and the racing was cancelled. We hung around the area for a few days but never did get to race at the Denver track and I don't know which track they were talking about. We left Denver headed home and ended up in Ft. Collins at a little asphalt track that was a part of an amusement park I think. Our guy tore the coupe up with a hit against the fence and we worked for two days just to get the front end under the coupe and the tow bar attached for the return trip to Iowa. I don't remember the uncles name and if any oldtimers read this they might correct me on the Sterling track and the Ft. Collins track but I think that was where we were in either 1954 or 1955.

Hello my name is Jeff Blanton, I live in Cheyenne,Wy. I have been interested in racing for about 22 years .I started going to Big Country Speedway just before my oldest son was born. A few years into going to the track my brother Robert Blanton and myself started working the pit shack, then my brother started racing what was known back then as streetstock cars. With the help of my 2 other brothers in Idaho and Utah we started Blanton Brothers Racing.Over the years I stopped going out to the track and moved down to Arizona.I moved back to Cheyenne in 1995 but never went back to the track until I got remarried to my new wife in 2010.I spent some of my wedding night out at the track and got asked to work on my nephews Mod4 car, after doing that for the season I got the racing bug again and bought my own Mod4 and drove it last year.

"The Toby Jug, Bull & Bush, Ichabod's" Classic

O.K, memory straining time. As I recall, in 1975 and 1976 the Colorado National Speedway open wheel season, started with a afternoon split show, midgets and sprint cars. 3 area bar and grills were the sponsor, Toby Jug was on east Hampden at so. Yosemite, Bull & Bush was at 4700 Cherry Creek Drive, Ichabod's was at 7095 e. Evans. I think midget owner Bob Morrison had an interest in these restaurants. It was always dusty, dry slick, usual day show conditions for a dirt track. However, the midget main event both years, was simply spectacular, it was a 4 car fight every lap of the 25 lap main, and all four cars finished under a blanket at the checkered flag, truly amazing race. Strangely it was nearly the same 4 cars and drivers both years! Here's where my memory fails me, in 1975 it was Dave Strickland Sr., Eddie Jackson, Spyder Anderson, and Steve Troxell, all in Edmunds built VW's, Troxell the lone wolf in a Edmunds SESCO Chevy. In 1976 I think Sam Sauer replaced Troxell in the top 4, Sam was in Bob Olds LTC built VW, but I really can't remember for sure, anyway 2 fantastic midget races. I don't remember the sprint car main events, I'm looking for info, and will add it when I find it.

Strickland Sr.#1, Frank Mantello was in the "Hainds&Ludwig"#41 Edmunds SESCO Chevy, Steve Troxell in the #29. Gorgeous #4 sprinter on the trailer, wish I new the owner and driver.

Going at it full tilt, Strickland, Jackson, Troxell, Anderson is just out of the picture in 4th place.

Under green here, but this is how they finished under the checkers, I think Strickland Sr. won it, then Eddie, Spyder, and Troxell, I may be wrong. Spyder took a obvious hard hit to the tail! Not sure who's Chevy II is in the infield has a partial #8 on the tail?

Eddie Jackson did double duty, here he is in Frank Marcello's Edmunds #5 Sprint car.

Again, I don't remember a Grant King built, sprint car in Denver, but this #7 sure looks like one, don't know who's in the wheel house, anybody know??

This may be owned by Everett Hogan, old bolt on cage car, who's driving this #58?
Please, if any of you folks have better memories, or more details you can share, add to this thread!!
Forgot to thank RJ Butz for sending me these photo's, he is digging up some cool Denver midget history.

In Remembrance... CURLY DOGGETT - The Purple People Eater, 1926-2012

In the West Nebraska panhandle, the color purple and the number 5 in auto racing were pretty much synonymous. I recetly learned that Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame, and BCRA Hall of Fame, and one of my boyhood auto racing heros, Gale "Curly" Dogget, age 85, had passed away in Alaska where he'd retired.

In 1951, Dad had transferred out to Sidney, NE and told me that there was lots of stock car racing going on. That was the first year of the DEVILS MOTOR CLUB, and that made the impending move much more tolerable. I was ready. When he moved the rest of us there in early 1952, I couldn't wait for the start of the new season. May 4th, 1952, I'll always remember the date. (Interestingly enough, we moved from York, NE, the town where Curly was born). A car that got my attention right away that Sunday afternoon, was a purple and white '36 Ford coupe, #5. Amid a rainbow of colors seen on those early fifties stock cars, Curly's cars were the only ones painted purple. I was hooked, purple seemed to be the coolest color, expecially since Curly's cars were fast.

The first photos are from 1951 showing Curly (so nicknamed because of his curly red hair) first with his '36 coupe, then winning one of his many
trophies. Pretty good crowd in the covered stands. Crosby Motor Co. was the local Studebaker dealership in Sidney, Mr. Crosby being Curly's father-in-law.

Curly tore up his share of stock cars as shown in photo 3 getting pulled back up on to the track after getting upside down. WW II trucks seemed to be used for lots of things, including this tow truck. After a little paint touch-up, Curly wins another trophy, photo 4.

The final photo here is the Crosby Motors 'house' car, a '38-'40 Studebaker four door sedan, #55. It was one of the first stock cars that I spotted when we moved there, just sitting forlorn in a vacant lot, never to race again. It wasn't purple, but used the same number style that Curly used, so he must have had some input on that. The driver is unidentified. A lot of sedans were built into stock cars during those early years.

Hi all, my name is Kym Pritchard and I am no racer! I do however write the program for Ellenbrook Speedway in Western Australia.
We are a small but busy club formed in the 1970's who runs over our winter. We host a few title meetings and this year will be hosting the Production Sedan State Title. Last year we held the Street Stock title and next year may be hosting the Super Sedans Title.
I would love to hear from anyone who has any memories of our club.

Question... Looking for info On my dad

:kurtis:Hello racing fans. I just registered to this amazing website. Im so happy I found it. Im looking for any information or photos about my father. His name is Bill Oatman and he was a stock car driver at Englewood in the 50's. His car was always #19. I have three trophy's he was awarded, and Im sorry to say the only other information I have is from whats engraved on them. The first one says "Classic Champion, 1955 RMSCRA" and then his name. The second one says "Geo Pfalmer Coors throphy 1957 class "B" Pikes Peak speedway" and then his name. The last one says "RMSCRA 1959"B" Main event co-champ #19, Ben Baker, owner, Bill Oatman, driver. As a young girl I remember him having many trophys on display in our house (prob about 40). So he must have been amazing. Sadly these three are all that remain. So if anyone can help me out I would be so thankfull.

This is how we towed them back then

Seen a bunch of old Midgets photos, felt some might get a kick out what we pulled those old Midgets with.
Yes, even said "Tow Car" just ahead of the front door.
Check out the wheel spokes.

As for the Midget, not very wide tires back then.
