Late Model stock car racing was nothing new to this area during the '50's and '60's, but Modified and Midget racing seemed to be the main attraction at a lot of the Colorado tracks.
Although Englewood Speedway was not one of the first tracks to host late model stock cars, the Codner family realized the popularity of this type of racing and finally featured their own division for the 1967 season. Before that, the only late model type of cars that ran at the track had to run the Figure 8 course, as the oval was reserved for Modifieds and Midgets. Fans packed the stands to catch this "new" division and car owners and drivers from all over came to give the 3/8 mile paved oval a try.
Known as late model "Super Stocks", the division started running on Saturday nights at Englewood while Sundays featured the Modified shows. By the late '70's the term Super Stocks for these cars was dropped for Late Models. Today, at many race tracks Super Stocks and Late Models are two separate type of divisions.
This thread features some of the Englewood Super Stocks from the late '60's thru the mid-'70's. This was a great, innovative time for these type of race cars as many makes and models were used. By the late '70's, as this class morphed from Super Stocks into Late Models, it seemed the "Camaro & Prefab Revolution" took over and all the cars pretty much looked the same.
