Hi Pikes Peak Stock Car Race Memories. I was a fan about 1967 to the end of the 1969 season. I met Ken Foster in 1972 and was on his pit crew. The # was 333 and his relative Roy Bowers raced #33. In 1974 Charlie Russo asked if I wanted a job at the track as assistant pit steward, and I accepted. I helped Rich Barker in the pit shack for awhile and then Little Bill Williams took over Rich's job.
I really enjoyed the Saturday night races. Rain or shine I was sitting in the stands. In January of 69 I went into the Air Force. Then went to Viet Nam from December 70 to December 71. My sister mailed me a cassette tape of the time trial sounds during the summer of 71, which I treasured until my apartment was broken into in 74 and it was one of the tapes that was stolen.
A lot of the drivers are still around. Larry Carnes, Alvin Browning,Larry Martin,Bill Clarke, Dewey Bassit, Mahlon Saunders, Beck Bectelheimer, and Dave Miller,I see almost every month as we have a Pikes Peak Stock Car Racing Reunion Meeting at the IHOP on North Powers. The next reunion is on October 5th at the Elks Club on North Nevada. The Meeting is this coming Thursday at 6:PM at the IHOP. Anyone is welcome to attend.
