Fifty years ago this weekend (9/1/13), Sept. 1 & 2, 1963, Lakeside Speedway had one of it's two day cards scheduled, including "THE BIG 500" on Tuesday. Sometimes that "Big 500" would be a combined event with the stock cars and midgets. This one appears to be just the stockers. I managed to get to about a third of the races that year, but must have missed this one while preparing for graduation and marriage. Too much on my mind, but had seen and photographed a lot of this season at Lakeside. Arguably the last good season (in my mind anyway) based on car count of a single class. There were at least 110 CARC cars (listed) plus several from Cheyenne, Colo. Springs and Pueblo. Witnessed a 19 car Hooligan race on one visit. It was an interesting summer of racing.
