Hey guys.

Jim Bunting here in Toronto.

I found this site by accident, and I am really impressed with it.

My interest in stock car racing started at age 12, when a neighbour who was 22 asked me to help him with his jalopy, a 34 Ford coupe, with a V8 in it. He raced at the Canadian National Exhibition stadium, here in Toronto. This was in 1960.

It was a third of a mile, asphalt surface with no bank at all, with a grass football field in the infield. There were two classes, Jalopies with stock eight cylinders, and modifieds with bored out buick and caddy engines, with 4 barrel carbs. They ran Friday night and Sunday afternoons.

I lived two miles from the track, and on Fridays I had to be satisfied with listening to the sound of the cars from my bedroom window, as my Mom wouldn't let me go out at night. Sunday I could go with my older cousin.

Fast forward to 1970. I met a guy who had a VW bug, that he was going to race at a local oval track. His name was Gary Elliot, and he is STILL RACING, at age 68. We call him The Iron Man. 2016 will be his 48th year of continual racing, and once again he will be sponsored by Quaker State motor oil.

Over the years Gary and I have been friends, competitors, and drivers who all ways raced each other clean, but hard.

We both had race cars for many years, with the Canadian Vintage Modified club. These are all metal , pre 1948 coupe and coach models, with a modern chassis and cage under the vintage body. The engine rule for many years was a inline six, with a 255 cubic inch maximum displacement. A 108 inch wheel base, and a minimum all up weight of 2300 pounds. Recently the club has allowed the 603 Chev crate engine, but about half are still using the sixes.

Open wheels, lowered bodies, radial street tires, aircraft gas, four wheel discs, and any cam, piston , rods, and head that will fit...equals a lot of fun and very competitive racing.

Gary Elliot will be racing two cars this season....a OSCAR modified ( a Troyer chassis ) and a 2014 Port City limited late model. He 2016 schedule is 33 race nights, with some involving racing BOTH cars at the same track. His farthest race trip will be driving 1220 miles, from Toronto, to Nova Scotia, to race in a 250 lap LM special. The track down there is an exact copy of Bristol speedway.

He has not missed a race in the past 30 years, for any reason.

The CVM club will be racing a 15 night season this year, at 7 different tracks in southern Ontario.

Jim B.
