Some of you may remember this, if so please comment, correct, whatever.
I don't remember if the incident I'm going to tell about was a World of Outlaws race or just a special event that paid big money and therefore drew in some real hot-shoes, such as Wolfgang, Bennett, some others, . . . and Ron Shuman.
It was Colorado National Speedway, probably 1979 - the main event ran and ran and ran, one yellow flag after another but no red flags; there was only a few laps to go and the top guns were running out of fuel and rubber. Ron Shuman was right up front and may have been leading the deal - but he was getting ready to run out of fuel. Recognizing that, he tore down the backstretch and signaled to his pit crew with his thumb over his shoulder that he was out of fuel.
Next lap he caught a back marker between one and two and spun him on purpose. This brought out the yellow. Somewhere in all this his crew got one of those hot jeeps from that jeep club that used to push us off and hauled it on up to the pit entrance at turn two with some fuel and parked so that they were headed down the back stretch.
Ron came around and literally slid his car right up to the bumper of the jeep. They tossed in some fuel and maybe changed the right rear - not sure. They pushed him off and he dutifully went to the back of the pack with three, maybe four to go. Then he won the race. :midget:
