Back in the 40's and 50's drivers came up with some strange looking painted helmets.
Here are a few of my favorites.

This is the only photo I have of the Conklin Chevy Sprinter. It was a a light bluish-grey and it was number 64.
Jim Malloy is behind the wheel in this photo taken at El Centro in 1967.
I need some posed photos.

Question... Old Colo Modified needs ID

Will probably goof this up trying, but will attempt to show pics of old modified I found in Villa Rica CO about 10-12 years ago...bought it with spares and trailer, have it in GA where they will not allow it to race due to some creative rules here. ONLY info I have is it says Hassig Chev/Yampa COLO on the back, has a HUGE wing with "Mobile Wash" on the side. Cross bar rear, recent change to spring front, had SB chev at some point plus others it appears, Ross steering, cell, Halibrand, and all dirt tires. 88" WB, Speedy Bill body. Was told two brothers from Steamboat area owne it at one point. Any info on this out there??

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone remembers a Warren Trott, from Englewood and possibly lakeside waayy back in the day. He was my grandfather, and I remember that he drove a modified #19, and he also owned and drove a figure 8, I know that my mother drove in a powder puff or two. but I cant find any info from back then and it would be fun to find out if anyone knew anything.

The Life and Times of Ody Fellows

Here are a bunch of pictures from Ody Fellows collection. Ody is 82 years old and still working everyday. His latest project: A replica of the #56 Sprint car formally driven by Jim Hurtubise. This car is owned by Missourian Gordon Von Steck and is scheduled to appear at Bellevilles museum. There are photos featured here that range from Ody's California road racing gig, to standing on his head in front of his Englewood modified. Ody is a encyclopedia of racing knowledge and like him or not....he don't care. He loves to tease the most seasoned of drivers/builders...and when I am 82....I won't/can't because I have not done it all...not like Ody has! Enjoy these great photos.

Ft. Collins race track

Do any readers remember the little asphalt track in Ft. Collins? I mentioned it a few weeks ago and did not get any response and in fact it was so long ago, 1954 or 1955, I am not exactly sure we were in Ft. Collins. It looked like a track built for midgets it was so small and if I remember it was a part of an amusement park. They were racing Ford coupes the night we were there. Am I dreaming or as usual I have forgotten places and names from so long ago?

And Cogan Walks Away!

We can't forget Geoff Bodine's truck crash!

Introduction... Here there Folks

Hello from the Great NorthWest...Tacoma Wa. to be exact... I have been around and involved in short Track Racing pretty much most of my life. My family (uncle, Cousins) are still involved in going fast. At this time in my young life(61)...I build the FAST cars in scale. That is my way and my small part of keeping the rich racing History in our Country alive. I'm looking forward to seeing and sharing pics and talking Racing.

The mite vs the mighty!

RJ Butz sent some remarkable photos to me, regarding one of my personal favorite all time Colorado auto racing stories. It's 1977, Enlgewood Speedway is hosting a "Open Competition" super modified invitational race. I'm no expert on Englewood Racing Association history, but I believe in 1977 they allowed 350 cubic inch V8's with carbs running racing gas. Also they had on board starters and a clutch and transmission. Salt Lake City had a super mod club but I think they allowed direct drive (push start like a sprint car or midget) and fuel injection and methanol fuel. This would put the Denver boys at a disadvantage in a on track confrontation. Also a sprint car would be lighter and faster but would not have a wing like the ERA supers. All that being said, management at Englewood Speedway decided to hold this open comp show, sprint cars, fuel injected supers, were invited, wings, no wings, run what ya' brung. Eddie Jackson Denver racing legend, shows up with Chuck Mauro's Edmunds built sprint car, injected 350, but it breaks in hot laps. Eddie asks Rich Codner if he can run home pick up his midget and race it against the supers and sprint cars, this being a open comp, run whatever ya' got race. Codner says yes...Eddie dashes to his house in Edgewater, picks up Harry Conklin's midget, makes it back to Englewood and puts the midget in the show. And then spanks the super mods and wins the feature and the whole enchilada. Wow. I did not get to see that race, but National Speed Sport News ran a photo in their paper of Eddie in his midget, inside Larry Kassell's super mod, reading "The mite vs the Mighty". Englewood was a 1/3 mile paved oval, suited for the small block super mods, the midget Eddie drove was maybe a 133 or 140 cubic inch VW, no wing. I've told this story before, but I've never had access to photo's of the event, till now.

Don Edmunds built, Harry Conklin owned, Foster Campbell chief mechanic, and a truly talented race car driver at the wheel, Eddie Jackson. This car was chrome yellow with silver leaf numbers and letters, Rick Carelli drove this car for awhile, and it became the maroon and black #49 with gold leaf trim that Eddie won the first ever Belleville Midget Nationals in, during the 1978 season

Eddie gains on a carburated and winged super mod, can anyone I.D the super mod car and driver?

Maybe Vaughn Ager in the #121 fuel injected super? From what I've been told Eddie just gobbled these guys up, must have stunned those super mod folks. If any ARM members were there, please add to , correct, this story, has to be one of the greatest upsets in Denver racing history.

Hi, all, I'm here to research Dick Atkins, my second cousin, and to talk about racing in general. I have seen some pictures of Dick on this site, I would love to get some that are bigger to give to my mom. She has several from when Dick just missed Indy 500 and a couple old champion spark plug ads he did locally in the Bay Area. I have an uncle almost 70 years old and 2 cousins still racing in No. California. I was the only family member not to make left turns, I preferred going fast an straight.
